Swapping out a Cruise Ship Crankshaft

Engineers can be SO cool!

This is a fascinating video of a company called ALE*, who specialised in moving/lifting/sliding heavy stuff, swapping out a 7.5 ton crankshaft from an engine on the cruise liner MS Zaandam.

This is small-scale, bread & butter stuff (they did two cruise ship crankshaft replacements last year – MS Amsterdam & MS Sea Princess) when they are not swapping crankshafts they are jacking up giant oil rigs or hoisting LGP tanks into position.

So next time you are watching the waves & scenery pass by your cruise ship cabin balcony, armed with a large cocktail, drink a toast to engineers like this who make it all happen!

* ALE was bought by the Dutch firm Mammoet in January 2020
