The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is a massive piece of civil engineering comprising a 29.6 kilometre bridge and tunnel crossing of the Pearl River Delta in Southern China.

After eight years of construction, the bridge is finally due to open on Tuesday 23rd October, and it is expected that President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony¹.

The overall project, totalling 55 km of road, is designed to link up the industrial mainland city of Zhuhai with its immediate neighbour, Macau – a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, and, across the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong, another SAR.

In addition to the political sensitivities around linking the mainland with the two semi-autonomous regions, the bridge also has to cope with some complex transitions between the regions who have different laws & taxes AND different driving regulations. In Hong Kong and Macau, traffic drives on the left. In mainland China it’s on the right. Traffic will drive on the right on the bridge & tunnel, with transitions being made at Boundary Crossing Facilities (BCF) for Macau and Hong Kong traffic.
