There was talk about it happening at one point in the Washington, DC area and it never panned out, so I’m hoping Erie will come through. I don’t see why this couldn’t work with the Niagara still in place as the only thing better than getting to visit and old Navy ship would be the ability to visit TWO Navy ships! The kids/visitors could see the massive differences and learn about the function of the FFG, and why it was such a great ship. Fast, nimble, light- those ships were outstanding and it was sad to see them decommissioned one by one.
One thing I can say with 100% certainty: You will never find a crew that is as close to each other as FFG crews. We were all asked to do a lot of work on those ships and it galvanized the relationship between the crew. I was on two FFGs and we keep in touch with each other quite a bit and hold several reunions, and I’ sure we would make Erie a reunion spot if this happened. Fingers crossed!
